Dodge Challenger Concept

With the release of the much anticipated Dodge Challenger, Chrysler has made a shocking announcement.  The production numbers will now be more limited, and fewer will be exported to the overseas market.  More importantly, the United Kingdom will no longer be getting a production model Challenger, instead, they will have to import the cars as a US spec car with left hand drive.

2009 Dodge Challenger video spy shot

The folks over at Inside Line have brought us yet another slice of the new Dodge Challenger pie, and boy, does it look (taste) good!  This clip exhibits the new concept test mule and some great audio from it.  The spy shooters claim that there was definitely a V8 underhood, and it’s mostly likely the 5.7 liter HEMI that will be offered for starters.  The rest of us are awaiting the 6.1 liter HEMI to satisfy our need for LSx and Cobra eating power.  Take a look at the video by Inside Line to get a glimpse of what’s to come.  As we find more, we’ll be sure to keep you posted!

Dodge Challenger & Chevrolet Camaro

The Woodward Avenue Dream Cruise always provides an excellent display of America’s finest automobiles in their best setting—showing off and looking for prey. This year, a particularly interesting incident occurred. To set the scene, the Chrysler Group was hosting a media event in front of Duggan's Irish Pub in Royal Oak, showing off the Dodge Challenger concept and the original 1970 Challenger that brought about the rebirth.

Challenger Concept in Royal Oak, Mi

We have been hearing a lot about the next Challenger. With a new Camaro and the soon to be updated Mustang both expected when the Challenger is released, the production version of the Challenger better be good. Since we cannot fast forward to the year 2008 and report all of the details, we are here reporting that The Car Connection was lucky enough to drive the hand built Challenger concept around Royal Oak Michigan. Just as you would expect, everyone honks or smiles in approval once they spot the orange car on the streets. Even with a DCX project engineer in the co-pilot seat to squash any “unauthorized” activities, the car was a blast to drive. No smoky burnouts were done and no full throttle starts were tried, for fear of blowing out the fragile rear suspension. Regardless of those two minor things, it must have been nice to roll around in the 1 of a kind Concept Challenger. Most of the car's concrete details still remain secret at this time. So will it come solely as an R/T model? Will there be a SRT8 version to choose from? What about the colors and that interior? Only time will tell, but in 2008 this Challenger will be all business when it hits the streets.

2009 Dodge Challenger

According to the Detroit News, Tom Tremont (Chrysler VP and lead designer) has stated that the production version of the Dodge Challenger will be identical to the concept version we've been ogling over for some time now. "You're not going to be able to tell the difference," he stated. While his commentary is likely directed at the exterior of the Challenger, it’s safe to assume the interior will also get a consistent brushstroke. "We knew if we screwed this up, we would lose a lot of fans," said Alan Barrington, who spearheaded the concept interior design.

Inside Line got to not only hold the keys to the Dodge Challenger concept, they got to drive it around. Big whoop--a controlled environment test drive; what a snore. Not in this case. DaimlerChrysler let the IL crew tool around on the open road and exhibit the car to the public. More detail on the Challenger's ups and downs during the test drive and exhibition can be found in their firsthand review.

Dodge Challenger

The Chrysler Group feels the business case is too strong to ignore for turning the Dodge Challenger concept into a reality. The plan, as it stands now, is to have (market) segmented volume, a V8 HEMI powerplant, and a price tag just above the Ford Mustang. Despite concerns about rising fuel prices, Joe Eberhardt (Executive Vice President of Global Sales & Marketing) feels the concerns are “a factor in a lot of our discussions. I wouldn't say (that) with Challenger because that is going to be a car probably for the enthusiast - probably a second or third car, probably not competing with everyday transportation." Eberhardt continued.
